Jacqueline, Padmakumar&Jaykumar
Ice breaker
Consider any situation where a
student could get emotional in class, divide it into three phases and discuss.
Eg: Step I:Teacher has given a creative
assignment, your name
is called out and you are asked to stand…………………..Discuss immediate first
reaction…..
Step II: Teacher
discusses the core of the assignment……Discuss second reaction…..
Step III: Teacher lauds your work..…Discuss
third reaction…..
Mind (psyche) and Body
(soma)
Can the body affect the mind?Give an example
drawn from your experience where because of bodily(physical) problems how the
mind responds.
How about the mind affecting the body? Give
an example drawn from your experiencewhere because of your mental problems how
the body responds.
.Emphasize on two-way communication between
mind and body, how one affects the other.
The whole self
Like general intelligence,
emotional intelligence can be measured, these Intelligence quotientand EmotionalQuotient are distinct qualities a person possess it
differs from person to person. Together they determine one’s personality and
thereby, how they think and act. Both the intelligences are flexible and can be
regulated. Especially EI can be
developed, one is not necessarily born with it.
The Psyche of
Emotional Intelligence
When one is
not in control of one’s emotions, they could get butterflies in their stomach.
Share experiences where you
felt butterflies in the stomach. Discuss the context and outcome.Eg: You are
told to give a speech in front of a huge audience.
What is Emotional Intelligence?
EI is an array of non-cognitive capabilities,
competencies, and skills that influence one’s ability to succeed in coping with
environmental demands and pressures.Emotions are private experiences. We infer observable behaviour
associated with emotion.EI can be developed even if you weren’t “born
with it”.
EI is a genuine
ability to:
develop one’s personal leadership, emotional connection,
emotional management and self awareness,
It is the ability to:
-
Move forward
constructively with the interests at heart
-
Feel emotions in response to others
-
Understand how
others are feeling
-
Understand what
you are feeling
-
Build bridges
and alliances
-
Mend damaged
relationships
-
Empathize
-
Manage impulses
and stress
-
Be resilient
Activity

intelligence. (Discussion)
Effects
of Low EI
Thoughts, beliefs and emotional instability affects the EI which in turn
has a major impact on physical and mental health.
Four components of EI
Feeling component:Emotions are subjective feelings which might
have an external trigger. They are rooted in mental processes (labeling). They
make us feel in a particular way. They could have personal
significance. They vary in intensity and quality.
Bodily Arousal:There is biological activation through
Autonomic Nervous System and hormonal systems. They prepare and activate
adaptive coping behavior during emotional play. The body is prepared for action
in the form of alert posture, clenched fists, etc.
Purposive component:It gives emotions its goal-directed
force.It motivates action.It copes with emotion-causing circumstances.It is
supposedly a social and evolutionary advantage for humans.
Social-Expressive component:This is emotion’s communicative
aspect.Postures, gestures, vocalizations, facial expressions make our emotions
public. It could be either verbal or non-verbal communication. It helps us
interpret the situation. It enables us to follow how people react to different
phenomena.
IDENTIFY EMOTIONS (Activity)
Cartoon Calvin’s 12 pictures of different emotions are
shown, let students identify the emotions as they perceive them.
Discuss the following questions:
-
How do you
read and express feelings with your classmates?
-
How
do you recognise facial expressions of your teacher in class?
